چکیده

It is not possible to do direct tests to find the best LTE multi-antenna configuration for optimizing antenna diversity gain, antenna MIMO capacity or device throughput with the traditional antenna measurement method, i.e. an anechoic chamber. Of the two alternatives for making direct measurements, i.e. drive tests and the reverberation chamber, the reverberation chamber offers many advantages. It creates an artificial, fully controlled and repeatable Rayleigh environment in which measurements are simple, fast and cost effective. The throughput results in the reverberation are highly repeatable which makes it easy to differentiate between good and bad LTE terminals.

Characterization of Small Antennas & Wireless Devices for MIMO Systems in Rich Isotropic Multipath & Random Line-of-Sight

The current thesis is about over-the-air (OTA) performance characterization of wireless terminals in rich isotropic multipath (RIMP) environment as well as in pure line-of-sight (LOS) environment while not ignoring the random positions and orientations of the mobile terminals due to randomness of the user. The latest mobile wireless terminals such as iPhone and iPad can be used in any random po...

THESIS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Characterization of MIMO Antennas and Terminals: Measurements in Reverberation Chambers

The reverberation chamber (RC) has drawn considerable attention as a multipath emulator over the past decade for both passive and active over-the-air (OTA) tests. This thesis is about RCs for OTA applications. The overview of this thesis is given in Chapter 1. Although the main purpose of this thesis is characterizations of MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) terminals based on RC measurement...

Embracing Complexity: MIMO Over-the-Air Testing with the Reverberation Chamber

This article describes a repeatable reference environment for over-the-air (OTA) testing of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) devices and why the reverberation chamber is uniquely suited to provide insight into MIMO device performance. The importance of reference environments and the characteristics of the reverberation chamber in the context of 4G wireless systems are reviewed. Statistical...

Cost-effective OTA performance testing of MIMO-enabled LTE devices

High-quality wireless devices require an omnidirectional and uniform antenna radiation pattern. This pattern can be verified by measuring the over-the-air (OTA) performance. These measurements, which are an essential part of the certification test, need to be extended to include MIMO operating modes. The Rohde&Schwarz two-channel test method makes these measurements both cost-effective and repr...

Multiuser MIMO in LTE Advanced

Recently, the mobile communication industry is moving rapidly toward Long Term Evolution, or LTE, systems. The leading carriers and vendors are committed to launching LTE service in the near future; in fact, a number of major operators such as Verizon have initiated LTE service already. LTE aims to provide improved service quality over 3G systems in terms of throughput, spectral efficiency, lat...
